I might think dress codes are silly sometimes, but I also think it's important to be respectful of the places you visit. And part of that is adhering to dress codes. So I'd cover my head visiting a mosque that required it and I would cover my shoulders visiting a church that required it.

Though in this case does the dress code include the museum or is it just the Basilica? It might include the museum because iirc, you go through the Sistine Chapel as part of going through the whole museum. Idk for sure though.

I would follow the dress code if I'm going to visit, but I also understand why a woman doesn't feel the need to be "respectful" of these rules since they're all sexist (that doesn't mean don't be respectful of anyone's choice in how they dress as part of their religion, this is directed towards the institutions that continue to impose dress codes). To that end, if I felt very strongly I would simply not visit a place that force women to cover up. And I was raised Catholic, and my extended family is Muslim.

to be fair it's not really enforced anymore but you technically shouldn't have bare shoulders in any catholic church...

I'm personally agnostic but in my opinion, even if it's not your faith your should respect the customs of the location you're visiting.
Pretty sure that dress would also be inappropriate in a Mosque or a Temple...
