June 14, 2021 The film starring Rose Byrne is set to explore president Jacinda Ardern's response to the attacks.
The movie has been heavily criticized for sidelining the 51 Muslim victims who were killed.
Following a backlash against They Are Us, one of the producers of the project has exited.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, has criticized the project.
Producer Philippa Campbell apologized for her own involvement and said she had not realized the pain the film would cause. New Zealand’s Prime Minister today criticized the project as poorly timed and focused on the wrong subject.
A petition from the National Islamic Youth Association calling for the movie to be canceled arguing the film would marginalize “the victims and survivors and instead centres the response of a white woman.”
The Muslim community had not been properly consulted about the project.
The mayor of Christchurch, where the attacks took place, said movie crews would not be welcome in her city.
