It's based on the memoir of this republican from Ohio who spent summers with his poor grandmother in Appalachia and made that his entire personality. Had a chaotic working class upbringing, joined the military eventually (I think?), then went to law school or something. Absolute bootstraps porn meant to kickstart the author's political career while taking shots at ~welfare queens~ and shit. Was often touted as a ~necessary~ read after the 2016 election as if it was some insightful piece of literature which...lol naw.

Haven't seen the movie so I can't say if it toned down the paternalism or not.
