I don’t think I could survive my current white-collar job without the faking-it skills I learned in retail.

I’m using them right now against my bold-ass coworker who [is being an absolute Karen, so I’m venting.]got put on a team with me and had the absolute nerve to complain to my manager about how *she* should be running the team, not the new manager that they hired. And we share the same job title (along with the other team member), so it’s not like she’s even more experienced or anything - I have supervisory *and* project experience. I knew what kind of person she was from the moment I met her, so while her belief isn’t surprising, the fact that she actually was bold enough to say it was.

Like today, I watched her scowl when I spoke during our program huddle, and make a side comment about something completely unrelated like she was trying to downplay everything I was saying. I used my god-mode retail powers to be extra nice and helpful to everyone else because this was literally the first time any of us met our new manager. I’ve never met anyone who’s made it this far in their career and is so blatantly upset when things don’t go their way… okay, I guess that’s technically not true but the other one was a white woman, too, so maybe it’s that? Either way, I’ve decided to let my work and reputation speak for itself, and let her end her own career, because this is a fight she can’t win. As I told my coworker, “I thought there wasn’t any way to add nails to the coffin, but I guess you can do it from the inside, too”

God, grant me the unearned* confidence of a white woman (but without all the extra baggage)

* edited to add this, I feel pretty confident for how far I’ve come (and with enormous anxiety, haha) but it would be nice to understand what that would feel like
