Since ONTD has been wondering what on earth production was thinking with these casting choices....

Lucie Arnaz, Lucy and Desi Arnaz's daughter, addressed this topic in two posts from her official facebook page.

In this first video post back in January, Lucie addressed specifically why Nicole Kidman was chosen over Debra Messing:

I guess I have doubts that Debra could pull off the dramatic aspects, and I have doubts Nicole can pull off the comedy? lol oh dear

Could’ve cast them both and just switch them out depending on the scene lol

I think Debra can pull it off. Will & Grace had some serious scenes and she can pull it off well.

Grace's huge blowup with Will when she began seeing Leo when they were supposed to have a baby together comes to mind.

But I think casting Debra in the film probably won't shake off the Grace character.

That and Debra is pretty vocal about politics. Sometimes more than she should be.

MTE exactly on all counts! I was gonna try to post the argument scene from WAG bc that scene always gets me. and honestly I feel like the "essence of a person" referred to in this video is a nice way of saying Debra is too outspoken and probably has bad will for her political rants lol.

Debra did well in Searching which was a dramatic role. Cop investigating disappearance of a child.
