As per my annual tradition of too-early Oscars fatigue, now that we're done with the nightmare that was the 93rd Academy Awards (early predictions from that, though pre-COVID, found here), let's look on to next year. The 94th Oscars will be back

So what part of West Side Story does Spielberg object to that he needs to remake it?

I doubt Spielberg cared much about this, but the original had a whooooooole bunch of white people wearing literal brownface to play Puerto Ricans. They even made Rita Moreno wear dark makeup.

yeah, I wouldn't doubt any of that from another director or at least a remake not starring the ansel.

I mean it's sort of the nature of musicals that they get re-done with new casts. The original is fine, but it's very unpleasant for me to watch it when half the Sharks are played by white people in brownface. I do wish a Latino person was directing it instead of Spileberg, but I'm honestly stoked to get a new version with updated orchestrations, choreography, and casting.
