During Sunday nights Oscar the teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story dropped.

The film was supposed to come out in Dec 2020 but was pushed to Dec 2021 due to the pandemic.

Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler star with supporting roles from Rita Moreno and Ariana Debose.

it's like they're trying to make the new film pointless

I mean, there's a lot of brown face in the original film. Granted Rachel Zegler is Colombian, not Puerto Rican, it's still nice not having a lead actress coated in bronzer.

i mean stylistically. it just looks like a love letter to the original. maybe the actual film will be different, who knows

I agree, I think some of Spielberg's shots look cool though (the shadows for example) but there looks like a lot of homage the original. I hate the coloring though. It reminds me of the coloring in Les Mis. A musical can still be gritty with bright colors!

don't get me wrong it looks stunning! the lighting, the cinematography, it's art. but yeah it looks a little too desaturated.

I thought they were all supposed to be a dirty and unkept and that was why the Jets were also so dark.

Lol oh no, they're supposed to be a Puerto Rican gang. It's central to the theme of the story - it's about racial tensions and violence, prejudice, etc. Natalie Wood is supposed to be Puerto Rican...

lol i know that. It's my favorite musical. But I always thought the reason for the bronzer was to make everyone including the Jets dirty looking to appear to like dirty hoodlums. I didn't know they darkened the skin to make them appear Puerto Rican. It's looks like they darken everyone's skin, not just those playing Puerto Ricans.

Ah right, my bronzer comment was just a general comment about the whites playing Puerto Ricans, there was also makeup done to make them look dirty too.

Thanks for the info though. Now I'm disappointed they did brownface in the original.
