Today, I'm doing an installment that reflects what I've needed over the past few weeks: Episodes with Powerful Messages.

Was Checkpoint the episode where she gets Giles back pay?

Because that moment was so amusing.

Yes. Giles gets paid and Buffy, who risks her life every single night, gets nothing.

I never thought of it like that.

That's some bull!

She really should have demanded they pay her, especially after Joyce died and she started having money issues. If they can pay the watcher (who also had another paying job and then his own business...) there's no reason they couldn't have paid her! But also, like where do they even get their funding?? lol

I always found it sad that Faith lived so crappily, and was part of the reason the mayor could turn her. You think that would have come up before and be good reason to support the slayers.

Seriously! They just thought of slayers as expendable tools though, barely human. :/

I guess they never thought about paying the Slayers because most of them killed before they were 18.
And historically, a woman was dependent on her family or husband for support, the Watchers were so old-fashioned they never considered it.

It truly is infuriating. I kind of hate to give Whedon or his team this much clever-credit, but I kind of think it might've been a representation of the society we live in: high-up, born-into-power old men dictate how things are done because 'thats just how its always been', and the fact that Buffy (i.e. the work force and majority of the population) actually HAVE the power and DO the work (aka make the profit) means next to nothing. The money and real compensation goes to the higher ups, the mid-level management, but not to the people on the frontline.
It's so annoying! Much like the US government and most major corporations, tbh.
