He tortured and butchered men too. I don't think anyone sane thought it was "cute", they thought it was interesting/well-written.

I agree that some people just wanted to fetishize them. But I think other people also wanted them to be romantically involved because it would have been interesting and entertaining to watch. I understand what you're saying about representation and it's a fair point, but IME many LGBT people (myself included) also want to see LGBT relationships of all kinds in media the same way hetero people get interesting flawed and toxic relationships.

Plenty of people wanted them to kiss because it would've been "interesting".

Idk why we can't have shows with non-problematic characters being polite and treating each other with mutual respect... Would be way more interesting.

I never said I wanted this shit as representation.

Idk what you're on about. We can only watch things we want to see happen in real life?

lol ppl would have most definitely shipped it if it was a m/f pairing though, not to mention it would have also been made explicitly canon. but then again hetero pairings get to be validated in a way that m/m and f/f pairings do not. though judging by Will/Hannibal and Villanelle/Eve's popularity that doesn't stop shippers from doing their thing (/haven't finished either of those series)

the fandom was hella sexist, even here on ontd. i used to mod the ontd_hannibal comm and there were a couple people who had to leave because they couldn't handle all the alana hate from people calling her "a fucking idiot" for not believing will when she had no reason to

Abuse, but make it sexy! If your definition of sexy is someone whose face looks like a leathered shoe.

lol right I never got the obsession. If it's m/f it's ABUSE but if people can pretend it's gay then it's cute like... come on.

as someone who started Killing Eve bc of the ~promise of Villanelle/Eve (haven't finished the show though), I'd rather watch a f/f toxic fictional relationship than yet another man abusing a woman bc we all know that's what the majority of the toxic m/f pairings are. I'm not starting a show about an assassin expecting healthy and wholesome. but lmao if heteros can get yet another tired fictional ship where a woman has to put up with some man's abuse and be validated in canon then idgaf about policing problematic lgbt ships

No, I get that and I'm also not hetero. Especially if you're watching a show about a cannibal or assassins, it's just odd when people who do like these ships try and suddenly gain moral ground once any m/f ship so much as has an argument.

I've seen m/f shippers act persecuted when they're actively pushing poc characters to the side (had friends who were into the Sleepy Hollow fandom). I'd find it very ridiculous if they were like "you ship x/y problematic lgbt pairing so you have no leg to stand on!" when being dunked on for their (lbr racist) preferences for example. this opens up a big discussion. but lbr m/f shippers of white couples are definitely mrkrabssmallestviolin.gif
