It's kind of like when you go to a store on January 1st (after the holidays and New Years resolutions) and suddenly all their diet stuff is on the first store display you see. Meal replacements, protein shakes, sugar free everything. It's capitalism saying, "I know everyone is insecure about their weight right now and we will be here to prey on that." Most times we can choose to go into that section or not and avoid it if need be, but in January...good luck.
So Demi feels like she was caught off guard by a massive display of diet culture, which was especially difficult in a place where she's going to get dessert.
However, all that said, I don't agree with her and she's being an asshole.
MTE. She shouldn't live there. She should honestly quit showbiz and move to South Dakota (I suspect she likes attention too much though). I understand that she has mental health issues but SHE needs to work on those, not constantly lash out at others who aren't catering to her.
This is the best and most generous and succinct summation of her argument I've seen so far. I don't agree with her either (at all) but the way you've put it at least makes it coherent! You've pulled off a miracle here!
ive literally never seen that at a store on january 1st, what. where do you live? also frozen yogurt is supposed to be seen as 'healthy'/diet ice cream, so shouldnt that food in itself be triggering, as its apart of diet culture?
I think it's more likely that you're not attuned to it than that it doesn't happen in your local stores. Either way, it's definitely not a regional quirk of Southwest Ohio, like square cut pizza or the impending Brood X Cicada Apocalypse.
The relative concept of froyo as "healthy" isn't really relevant, since Demi's reaction is out of line and out of proportion, regardless.
i've worked in food retail for different big chains for a decade and our january merchandising planning is literally called "healthy winter". it is a thing.
I think she took it as sugar free = 'diet' (like how 'diet' coke/coke zero has sweeteners instead of sugar), and not that people might order it for other reasons (like diabetes or something). I'm not really sure why though as I assume it was just labelled as 'sugar free'...it doesn't sound as though they even advertised it as a diet or weight loss version.
