Morphe announced Friday it’s finally ending their business relationship with James Charles. He has been accused of inappropriate contact with underage boys, which he has both “apologized” for and tried to minimize.

This does not read as accountability 🧐

Do brands ever do accountability tho?

did the OC mean morphe or JC? I assumed they meant JC, because he takes none.

what's the staying power of influencers once it starts to fall apart? do they get comebacks or do they usually actually have limited celebrity capital?

They can come back, all it takes is a new social media platform and a fresh crop of kids who aren't familiar with their BS on previous platforms.

I don't even think it takes a fresh crop. The parasocial relationships with these influencers are so strong that I think they'd have to be caught on camera doing something undeniably heinous to actually lose those fans. And maybe not then because they will rationalise away anything

This is a good point; social influencers encourage the fake intimacy way beyond what Taylor Swift or company twitter campaigns making their brands seem like people will do. The internet is just so vast with so many influencers ready to replace them, and could easily fill the void when their main influencer is dropped, that I wondered how easy it is to get new fans these days. Especially when you actually don't have much talent, but he is a white man.

coming to an "agreement" with him to "wind down" production of your collaboration =/= doing the right thing and cutting all ties with AN! ADMITTED! PREDATOR! and discontinuing all sales of his products, like that shit's still on sale on your website so what's the point of this besides giving james something to point to to say these "false allegations" are fucking with his coin and making him the victim? fuck morphe

It's lawyer speak. JC is/was their #1 cash cow and their ties are likely deep AF. They probably don't want to open themselves up to a lawsuit, so the easiest way out is to just sell whatever stock they have left.

Also, I'm almost certain that their parent company Formabrands is still going to produce JC own makeup brand.

I really hope this is the beginning of the end for him, but I doubt it.

I think it will be, mostly because the current economy doesn't support what he's promoting. A lot of people are scaling back or down right can't afford the time/effort/money to do a full face of makeup. It was all fun and games for some people, but shit is getting real. His frivolous lifestyle will become less and less appealing imo.

I think so too. He's getting old and irrelevant. soon less and less teens will want what he's selling. Unless he manages to hold onto charlie and the tiktok crowd.
