Can we also do away with BMI please? It just doesn't make sense and doesn't consider enough factors to still be considered such a major indicator of health.

I was stunned at how commonly it's still used in medicine as the pandemic progressed in the UK.

It's really bad especially when doctors will use it as a diagnosis tool and dismiss your symptoms as simply being a result of being overweight.

And I think that it came out that the origins were fussy and that it was designed for other reasons? Wrong, outdated, time to retire.

It was originally developed in the 1800s in an attempt to quantify the "ideal man" and then another guy in the 70's was like "Well it's not great but it's the best option in a list of bad options" and apparently that was enough for the medical community for some reason.

I work in the public health field (specifically health promotion) and I find the BMI absolutely worthless to tell people about how to make ¨healthy¨changes besides losing weight. It's legit used for convenience (less expensive, easier to take, etc). Like, I'm pretty active and eat well/balanced meal and I would be considered thin/curvy. So I went to the doctor's for a check up and they calculated my BMI and while the doctor was basically telling me my lifestyle is pretty health, my BMI index indicates that I should lose weight. I'm looking at the Dr and they're looking at me and I'm like girl we both know that's a lie, like i would legit look like a bobble head/look super unhealthy if I lost any more weight. It's really ridiculous.

It's crazy! I'm 5'8 and the ideal weight range for my height is 122 lbs - 164 lbs. At 165 I'm a size 6/4/small like can you imagine me at 122??

I'm the same height/weight and a 10. Sometimes a 12. At 122 I didn't even get my period. Body's are so different. A one size measurement doesn't fit all bodies.

I think it is still used b/c it is is a pretty straight forward equation. Calculating body fat is actually pretty difficult, even if using calipers it all depends on who is measuring you and how accurate THEY are at doing the actual measurements. But yes BMI is basically worthless. Unfortunately things like bod pods are not widely used/available/convenient.

Like, two reasons that I'm fat: I eat too much and I don't move my ass that much.

LOL this is me. I go through random spurts of wanting to work out and putting aside time to do light cardio but then being exhausted from work and wanting to use that extra time to sleep.

It's truly only good for general population stat analysis. It shouldn't be used based on an individual basis but I will cede that it is only a starting point. It shouldn't be the standard anymore.

BMI should be a starting point , and not the be all and end all if someone is fat.

But the biggest flat of BMI is that it underestimates fatnsss. You can’t have a healthy BMI and still have too much fat.
