Comic book movies were mostly flops before Iron Man & what followed. By the time WB realized what was going on they rushed to catch up, but didn't have a plan on how to do it.

Not really true. Spider-Man 1 & 2, X-Men 1 & 2, The Dark Knight trilogy, Tim Burton's Batman, Christopher Reeve's Superman movies were all successful and critically acclaimed for the most part.
