South Korea's music industry denounces 'unfair' BTS military service deferment law

-- On April 1 the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) filed an official complaint to the Ministry of National Defense on the amendment to the Military Service Act passed in February that allows pop musicians who have received the Order of Cultural Merit from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to postpone their military services until the age of 30.
-- BTS was awarded the distinction in 2018 as an exception for its record-breaking footsteps despite having only debuted in 2013. Only musicians with over 15 years in the industry can be awarded cultural merit and the average age of musicians who have been awarded is over 60 years old.
-- The KMCA added that the law already discriminates against musicians since men who are doing undergraduate or graduate studies abroad or establish start-up companies are eligible for deferral.

inb4 fans dismiss this as other kpop agencies complaining their own lobbying was ignored. This amendment seems like a gift from the president for BTS' global good rep more than anything else *coughSaudiArabiaconcertcough* and the way it was conceived and ushered in is pretty telling.
