The 2018 biopic of infamous gay photographer Robert Mapplethorpe starring Matt Smith is now getting a Director's Cut reissue following the tepid response the studio cut got in its original release.

The new version has handpicked footage from director Ondi Timoner and restores her original vision of the film, before studio interference.

Specifically it makes the origins of Robert Mapplethorpe's fascination with BDSM clear , and contains new scenes that shine an increased light on his corrosive and often contradictory personality, and ultimate death from AIDS. This unrated version of the film also features more sexual situations and full-frontal nudity.
