Apr 03, 2021 19:20

Demi Lovato's seventh studio album, Dancing with the Devil...The Art of Starting Over, is officially her most well-received yet, with a Metascore of 79 based on six reviews. (Her previous effort, 2017's Tell Me You Love Me, scored a 72.)

"A decade ago, in 2011's 'Skyscraper,' Demi Lovato assured her listeners: 'Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground / Like a skyscraper.' She has fallen, hard, but continues to rise time and time again and remains a phoenix, perpetually guided by her greatest gift: her voice." ★★★★ -Consequence of Sound

"Dancing with the Devil is Lovato's finest, and most cohesive, album to date, and it doesn't need a plastered-on smile to prove it... A sense of confidence still feels integral to her being throughout, but it manifests differently, a light fragrance that floats into a blue sky." ★★★½ -The Line of Best Fit

"While most supposedly 'confessional' pop albums are really just mildly revealing, this one really goes deep... an album of 'take me as I am' jams that to an extent recalls Pink's career-making 2001 album M!ssundaztood. Powerful, purposeful and uncompromising, this is Lovato's [most] definitive artistic statement to date." ★★★★ -NME

"The triumph of Lovato's frankly fantastic seventh album is to take control of her own dramatic narrative and turn it into bright, witty, powerful and joyfully redemptive pop... the perfect pop artefact for our age of Instagrammatic oversharing, in which divisions between private and public life are increasingly blurred." ★★★★★ -The Telegraph
