The director of Britney Spears' documentary "Stages" speaks out

-In a year that is slowly but surely becoming a reckoning regarding the way media and society overall treated female celebrities in the 2000s, the director of Britney's own 2002 concert doc entitled "Stages: Three Days in Mexico" spoke to Vanity Fair about how the little known documentary came to be.
-The documentary was an outside pitch directly to Britney's team who greenlit it. However the label had not been informed leading to last-minute negotiations and a scramble to get any products that contradicted Britney's sponsorships at the time out of any shots. They also insisted that she would not be filmed smoking or drinking.
-The director was saddened by the on-going media circus around Britney and decided not to do the customary confessional interviews as scheduled. When they did eventually meet up for an interview months later, Britney told her that she was interested in going to NYU, taking belly dancing lessons, and doing more acting especially playing a "crazy young girl...Someone who has issues".
-The documentary was eventually given a low-key release in 2002 as a part of a tour photo book which has been out of print for a while.
