In celebration of Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, TheToyZone looked at how fandom of the series varies around the world (for the 151 original pokemon) . They analyzed Google search data to identify the most uniquely popular Pokémon in each country.

Highlights:

As expected Pikachu is the most popular pokemon in a global scale ( 1 in every 10 pokemon searches are about the pokemon mascot)

Charizard is the most popular pokemon in Europe , being the most searched in 9 countries: Andorra, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Sweden, and the U.K.

In North-America, Charizard was the most popular pokemon in 3 countries: Antigua y Barbuda, Canada and El Salvador, the most countries for any pokemon on the region.

According to the data , the most popular pokemon in the USA is Gengar, in México is Squirtle.

Peru and Chile tie as the countries with the 5th greatest interest in the series worldwide.

Pikachu and Charmander tie for the pokemon who have the biggest popularity in 3 countries in South America. Pikachu wins in Bolivia, Ecuador and Suriname, Charmander in Brazil, Chile and Perú.

Squirtle is the most popular in Colombia (taste!)

In the middle east and central Asia, Pikachu is the most popular in six countries , Mew is the second with 3 countries ( Afghanistan, Bahrain and Kuwait)

Asia is the epicenter for the Pokémon phenomenon and continues to be the site of the series’ largest fan base. According to the data, the countries with the greatest demand for Pokémon worldwide are Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Nepal. In the continent, Pikachu wins the race.

In Africa, Pikachu is the most popular pokemon, it is the most searched in 14 countries of the continent.
