Wasn't there some rumor that the Mickey Mouse Club told her to change her voice because she sounded too similar to Christina, and then she just kept running with that more nasally sound?

i thought the rumor was that her record label pushed her into that nasally baby voice to really lean into the lolita schtick their nasty asses were pushing when britney premiered. her actual singing voice was much deeper

This video really clarifies how Britney was on Broadway sharing roles with Natalie Portman. <3

No that’s false. It basically all boils down to Max Martin. I can’t remember what interview I was reading but I believe it was AJ. Max pushed for his artists to push through their nose to get a nasally sound. Which is really apparent when you listen to anyone he worked with back then. They all have a nasally, twangy in your face type of vocal from **NSYNC to bsb to Britney. Only thing with Britney is that is completely sounded unique when she did it and it just kinda became her signature sound and they ran with it. She basically became a voiceover artist with her own affected voice. I really wish she’d use her lower register more.

It was really apparent back then. Every thing was MAY for me, babAY for baby, a slight vibrato on the end of those particular words. I also think it affected Brit more though because she was solo. So it’s not like she would have a verse per song using that voice and then could chill out with letting other people do their parts of the song. She had to record hundreds of songs singing in that unhealthy tone so that had to be rough.
