There's just something so off-putting about someone with her amount of money asking the average person to donate.

I have a lot of issues with Gofundme in general though and I feel like it's almost been hijacked by people who don't actually need it.

Agreed I understand it’s not celebs jobs to pay for their friends surgery but then to ask people who do not have millions and millions of dollars is ridiculous if you’re worried about it and you have the money just donate yourself. And gofundme sigh I know how much people need it cus our government/healthcare is such trash but I know first hand people who have lied and used it to just buy shit they didn’t need. (Terrible roommate not a friend)

You're right, it's not her job but 60k is NOTHING to her. If she actually gave a damn about this person, why not just pay the entire bill? Kylie could make that money back in no time.

Yeah I had a friend who was in the hospital for a few weeks and his girlfriend set up a gofundme for costs but he’s a vet and I verified with his family that all of his med costs were being covered and it wasn’t a lost wages thing because he lives on his benefits checks which he was still getting. It was all very shady.

Ok yea this is the kind of thing I see A LOT, and I do think the friends or family that set it up have good intentions a lot of the time, but just because something bad happens doesn't mean the person needs money, it's like a weird knee jerk reaction at this point. I've said this before but some of it feels very "why pay for it if I can get someone else to?"

Yeah his gf is super shady though. Turns out she didn’t want to go back to work lol.

I also saw an online funding for someone to get treatment for covid because there wasn't anymore space in the free government funded hospital, they raised more or less 20k dollars in like 3 or 4 days then the update that came on the 5th day was that he were able to get a space at the free hospital....then "thanks for everything" lol like are you going to return that money or nah?

Or those babies that lost their mom in the Atlanta attack. The older brother was asking just for 20k to make ends meet and I think people donated a million or more. Of course, it doesn't fix the loss of their mom, but at least they will have money to keep a roof over their heads and not have to worry that much about money. Especially because they're so young, the older brother is just 23 :(

Omg at your mom. I totally understand you and your siblings, death is a huge business. Everything is SO expensive, even if you already bought a funeral service package, funeral homes always find new things to charge

We raised $100K for friends after the mother and daughter were diagnosed with stage 4 cancer within 6 months of each other. It enabled their dad to take time off work and not have to worry about making ends meet. They also got on a TV show where they had their house renovated and a ton of stuff given to them. It made what was such an awful time bearable.

Agree. Happy to see their basic needs will be met and they'll be able to afford grief counseling and therapy as well as be able to take time off work and school.

I feel like it's almost been hijacked by people who don't actually need it.

I don't spend a lot of time on there being broke myself but I feel like this is a horrible take? As long as we're all existing in this dystopian future and the US government thinks giving people $3,200 to survive the worst year ever is doing way too much, gofundme is doing a lot more good than harm.

No one is making people donate to scammers or people they don't know who they don't have the ability to vet. Even situations that have clear price tags often have unrelated costs and being poor (especially enough to have to beg and put your business out on the internet forever) is typically very expensive.

while i've seen people abuse gofundme and other venues for money (and i don't want to judge TOO hard because if they're looking for money they... need it for the most part and the govt has failed to provide adequate comfort/security for its people), i remember reading somewhere that gfm is now like one of the biggest ways that people in america pay for their medical costs. probably the only way some can.

i see people on tumblr asking for money all the time and while it baffles me once in a while to see people begging every month, i have to remember it's hard to save money when you have no money and anything they collect is being spent ASAP on bills, food, housing, etc. it's a vicious cycle and it's sad.
