From Executive Producer Chuck Lorre, here's a hilarious look at United States of Al, an all-new comedy starring Parker Young and Adhir Kalyan. The show focuses on the friendship between Riley (Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Kalyan), also known as Al, the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America. Watch the series premiere of United States of Al on Thursday, Apr. 1 on CBS.

The show was just trending on Twitter, with executive producer Reza Aslan defending it against criticism over its storyline and casting.

The show works hand in hand with two organizations - No One Left Behind and International Refugee Assistance Project - to make sure we aren’t just talking about SIV program and the plight of Afghan interpreters. We are trying to do something about it. Actually changing policy. https://t.co/MZbFCziyvB

There are five Afghan characters in the show and four of them are played by Afghans. We saw 100 Afghan leads but sitcom is a specialized genre and it’s very tough to play. But we also have four Afghan writers/producers on the show who’ve done a great job helping Adhir. https://t.co/bGej9bcN3B

...We do that by getting the biggest producer, on the biggest network, to do the biggest show possible about a topic that represents us. And then we do our best to make sure that the topic is treated fairly and properly. That’s why I’m here. Isn’t that why are you here?
