March 20, 2021 On Twitter, a site revealed that an R-rated version of the beloved comedy exists.
Director Christopher Columbus confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that an R rated version exists.
Columbus said that Robin Williams, improvised so much that there were PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 cuts of the film. The official film is rated PG-13.
Columbus explained that the numerous cuts were created after Williams would improvise after a few scripted takes. Sometimes he would do 15-22 takes after a scene.
“He would sometimes go into territory that wouldn’t be appropriate for a PG-13 movie, but certainly appropriate and hilariously funny for an R-rated film,” Columbus said.
There is no complete NC-17 version and it’s unlikely that the R rated version would be released. Columbus did say he was open to do a documentary about the making of Mrs. Doubtfire and it would feature of some the clips.
