I mean I always understood the plane incident as Maddox stepping in because Brad was going after Angelina. So it's potentially both.

Brad was drunk and fighting with Angelina and Maddox stepped in. I think he was cleared of child abuse charges (visits with the kids were monitored for quite a while though, might even be now Idk how long this can be mandated), which I assume means he didn't outright hit Maddox, but the way he behaved was clearly enough for Angelina to nope out of the marriage with the kids.

All of the reports around this have said that Maddox was stepping in between him and Angelina on the flight, but that it wasn’t the first time Brad was verbally abusive to Angelina
