You know there are always a couple of 'what/how in the fuck...?' nominations every year courtesy of ye ole Academy, and I'm here to list a few.

-- One Night in Miami... - a notable snub as it got tons of precursor noms, especially for best picture, and best director (Regina King).
-- Da 5 Bloods - tons of talk about Spike Lee's latest, which did get the SAG Ensemble nod, but otherwise snubbed almost entirely by the Academy (it got best score?). There was expectations of best actor (Delroy Lindo), director, and even picture.
-- Aaron Sorkin - was expected to be one of the best director finalists but thankfully the Academy made some good decisions and snubbed him (though still the frontrunner for original screenplay), and we got a surprise nomination for 'Another Round's Thomas Vinterberg.
-- Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom - was expected to get a best picture nomination, but outside of Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman's nominations was pretty much shut out of any of the big awards, which was a surprise snub.
-- Supporting Actress - Jodie Foster was expected to get a nod for 'The Mauritanian' as she won the Globe for it, but totally shut out; same with Helena Zengel, who was nominated for a Globe and SAG for 'News of the World' and was shut out too (though the Academy's rarely fond of kid nominees so that may have played against her).

And probably the biggest surprise...

-- LaKeith Stanfield's nomination as supporting actor for 'Judas and the Black Messiah', which pretty much shocked everyone. Not because he wasn't in the race, but he wasn't in the race at all for supporting actor - Warner Bros. pushed him as the lead and fellow Oscar nominee (and fave to win) Daniel Kaluuya as supporting. Apparently Academy members ignored the FYC and voted for him in supporting, and here we are.

Which begs the question everyone's been asking all day - wait was Jesse Plemons the lead of 'Judas and the Black Messiah', and, you know - not the two actors who played the titular Judas and Black Messiah??? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
