You're so right. Not that my opinion means anything, but I've always thought Glenn Close was a better actress than Meryl Streep. There's no denying Streep's amazing performance in Sophie's Choice and how adept she is at dialects, but she kind of relies on the same choices in roles that call for specific emotions or characterizations. I enjoyed Let Them All Talk more than I probably should have, but I saw so much of Miranda Priestly and even some of Sister Aloysius Beauvier in her portrayal of Alice.

Maybe It's because I've always been a big fan of Glenn Close, but I think she has more range and I never know what she's going to bring to a character, which makes watching her all the more interesting. If a character is written as difficult or cold or bitchy, then I already know what tics Meryl Streep with rely on to bring to the character.

Regardless, Glenn Close has deserved Oscars for, at least, a couple of the roles she was nominated for, mainly those of Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction and the Marquise de Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons. It would be a shame for her to win a consolation Oscar for dreck like Hillbilly Elegy.
