Why Selena Quintanilla's Fans Are Disappointed in 2021 Grammys Lifetime Achievement Tribute https://t.co/RNhBRkEOAi

Selena Quintanilla Perez trended overnight as fans raged over the lack of honor for her lifetime achievement award. The Tejano singer, who died in 1995, was among the multiple recipients of the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award and received a 3-second mention during broadcast. Fans were left confused and hurt by the perceived snub.

While the Recording Academy had not promised a more extensive tribute to Selena and doesn't typically devote time in the telecast for extended recognition to individual honorees, there was a clear impression that there would be a tribute by the way the academy used Selena's image and name to hype up the show. Even Selena's widower, guitarist Chris Perez, the Texas board of journalists and Texas congressman Joaquin Castro seemed to be under the impression that there would be a bigger honor. It also led to confusion as to why music legends Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Salt-N-Pepa and Talking Heads didn't warrant a tribute in the nearly 4-hour show.

Selena's sister Suzette later acknowledged fans' frustration, saying she too wished there had been something more for the Latina trailblazer.

The #Grammys even have a US congressman wondering what’s up. WHERE IS SELENA, #GRAMMYS https://t.co/k7iguiSHTL

I can’t say I blame @theweeknd for his stance on the Grammys.

Selena deserved more than a two second mention, may the elastic from the socks of #Grammys producers always give out. pic.twitter.com/YUhPVMXdFR

This has to be a joke @RecordingAcad - y’all gave #selenaquintanilla #selena THREE seconds to honor her legacy and impact on the music industry? WTF! pic.twitter.com/IaQ59G9kih

Hey @RecordingAcad, you hyped up this award for a 2 second picture. The rest of the artists in that category deserved better too. If you couldn't fit it into the live ceremony either don't make a big deal out of it happening or figure something else out #GRAMMYs #Selena pic.twitter.com/85drhDt6eF

This was a wasted opportunity for the @RecordingAcad. How incredible would it have been to have a few contemporary Latina nominees gather to perform a Selena medley? https://t.co/g5KgmfrhMA

the way they hyped up presenting Selena Quintanilla with the lifetime achievement award for them to literally only mention it for 5 seconds...mmm that don’t sit right with me

Me when the Recording Academy said there was going to be a Selena Quintanilla tribute vs Me when I saw 2 seconds of them announcing that she received the Lifetime Achievement Award #Grammys pic.twitter.com/UM1NhBiF53

@RecordingAcad made this huge deal of presenting #Selena a lifetime achievement award and all they did was include her in a PowerPoint slide with other honorees. #grammys Disappointing and Insulting.

I can’t believe the #GRAMMYs used Selena for views to boost ratings. I expected some kind of tribute thanking her for her contribution to music after it was announced she’d be getting a lifetime achievement award. She was barley mentioned during the televised show. So fucked up.
