Mar 12, 2021 11:07

EDIT: My mathing was off and the score has been updated!

Let me preface by saying that I will not be including the Descendants’ canon in this post.

This is something that has been ruminating in my brain since October 2020. It started coming up in dreams and it felt like there was no escape. I knew I had to get to the bottom of this idea. Is this comparison needed? Probably not. Does this theory need to be pushed out into the world? Absolutely it does.

Hypothesis: Dr. Facilier became Oogie Boogie after being pulled to the Other Side.

To test this hypothesis, I will present 6 arguments and rate them against a weighted 4-point rubric.
1 - Unsatisfactory
2 - Marginal
3 - Good
4 - Excellent

In case you are unfamiliar with these characters, here is a quick refresher:
[Le Dossier]

Dr. Facilier

Oogie Boogie

Alias: The Shadow Man
Alias: The Shadow in the Moon

Species: Human
Species: Sack of bugs

Origin: New Orleans, LA
Origin: Halloween Town, Holiday Forest

Iconic Song: Friends on the Other Side
Iconic Song: Oogie Boogie’s Song

[Let us begin]
1. Characters in the Disney Universe
Both Dr. Facilier and Oogie Boogie are part of the Disney, ergo they could be tied to the same universe. Here are photos of them from Oogie Boogie’s Halloween Bash at Disneyland’s California Adventure.

Rubric score: 3 - Good

2. Timelines match up
The Princess and the Frog takes place in 1926. The decade for A Nightmare before Christmas is unknown, but it has to be after the 1950s because we see that there are color TVs. Using cues from the setting, I’m placing the events in the late 1980s.

Rubric score: 4 - Excellent

3. Common Imagery
Some say that when one passes into the Afterlife, they bring along some qualities they held when they were alive. I have reason to believe this is true for Dr. Facilier and Oogie Boogie.
A. Cards
Dr. Facilier used tarot cards to tell Prince Naveen and Lawrence’s past, present, and future. Oogie Boogie likes to use playing cards to decorate his lair.

B. The color green
Like myself, they appear to favor a light green color.

C. Circles
They have a thing for circular designs.

D. Skulls
They also have a thing for skulls.

Rubric score: 4 - Excellent

4. Penchant for gambling
One of the first things we hear Dr. Facilier say to Prince Naveen is that “he’s not a gambling man.” However, in his next sentence he proceeds to offer a gamble of wager. So what is the truth sir?

On the flip side, Oogie Boogie clearly has a gambling problem. He is quite forthright about it.

It is quite possible that Dr. Facilier’s “aversion for gambling” manifested in a full-on gambling addition in the after-life.

Rubric score: 2 - Marginal

5. Catchy musical numbers

Their songs bump and the similarities are quite uncanny. Check out for yourself:

Rubric score: 3 - Good

6. Cab Calloway connection

Now this is my piece de la resistance, both characters are based on Cab Calloway.

Cab Calloway is a famous jazz musician. Watch Mr. Calloway’s iconic stage presence in this video:

Friends on the Other Side was written by Randy Newman, while Danny Elfman wrote Oogie Boogie’s Song. Could it be that they were due to be divinely connected from the start?

Rubric score: 4 - Excellent

Final Rubric score:

[Are you ready to find out?]20/30 (66.7%) 20/24 (83.3%)
In conclusion, I have found that there is an 67% chance 83% chance Dr. Facilier did indeed turn into Oogie Boogie when he as pulled to the Other side.
