That's so true.
The thing is, for artists and creatives, it's still very very valuable.
I think it comes down to the fact that if your hero, people you've looked up to, respected, copied even, have it, you want it, too, because it validates you in your own eyes and that of the industry.
Of course it's bullshit. But it's their bullshit. The problem became when the public got convinced that it's a measure of general worth or value to a general audience of non-professionals.
