it’s also weird to me that they didn’t give her non-hannah character a new name. it was miley cyrus playing miley stewart. that has to get weird when you’re doing it 8+ hours a day on shooting schedules or s/t

No. They didn’t use their real names in the show. They actually played characters. I feel like it mostly happened to the girls/ a girl character.

Probably for branding reasons, so it’s cemented in kids’ heads and there is no confusion.
Although I find this practice weird when it comes to adult sitcoms as well...Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, Cybill etc

Me too, then I saw an interview WS did on Graham Norton explaining that Alfonso Ribero told him to make his character's name "Will Smith" because w/e name he used he would called that for the rest of his life and it makes total sense now.

It does happen a lot with sitcoms! I totally forgot! But I thought that was more like, “I’m basically playing myself because I’m a standup comic who got a show, wtf else do I have?”

Yeah I always wonder how strange it must be for actors who play characters with the same name. Especially for those like Miley who are playing a stylised version of themselves. People already struggle to separate actors from their fictional selves.

On the other hand like Will Smith said, people are going to call an actor by their character name for the rest of their life so...might as well make it your own!
