I have. I don't want to erase his experience but I have met many savvy, intelligent, articulate, even kind, funny people who, given the opportunity, dropped their masks and exposed the seething mass of hatred and resentment hiding behind it.

I think prejudice has nothing to do with intelligence and the idea that we are "too smart for bigotry" is some sort of elitist fantasy where educated leftists preen and imagine bigots like Taylor Swift does in You Need to Calm Down - Hillsboro Baptist Hillibillies because US and WE, the college white collar artistic bleeding hearts, would NEVER! We can and we do, tho.

I know someone very kind and he’s always so nice. But he said something racist. I was very hurt by it and I explained to him that you shouldn’t be saying something like that. His explanation was but everyone is saying that.

some of the most cutting edge fields in tech or research fields are rife with really smart people that are selfish, bigoted, and lacking in empathy.

intelligence doesn't equal empathy.

Yeah, anyone can be racist regardless of their demographics. If anything (from what I read in an peer-reviewed article), "smart" people tend to either hide their racism better or simply rationalize their arguments and points to back up and support their racist attitudes and beliefs. I mean, look at the people in congress in the U.S. You have those folks with privilege, power, and status who had the best education yet know exactly what they are doing when they create barriers and other forms of oppression to marginalized communities. They're not stupid. They just care about money and white supremacy, not people. They have no moral compass ( ... )

“I've encountered racist folks in my field who continuously intellectualize and say the right things, yet say microaggressions and get sensitive to feedback.”
