I watched A Most Wanted Man, Blue Valentine, and finally finished The Dissident last night. Very much looking forward to Nomadland and I Care A Lot. Over the weekend I saw Judas and the Black Messiah.

Slate posted an article which articulated quite thoroughly the things I disliked about the movie. https://slate.com/culture/2021/02/promising-young-woman-movie-review-carey-mulligan-ending.html

Also, while I like Emerald Fennell, she was really far out of her depth in terms of the subject matter/ general understanding of American culture. I think that's why she was so purposefully vague about the setting and pretty much everything else. I thought the whole thing felt pretty superficial and half-baked.

yeah, that pretty much covered all the bases. thank you for sharing it.

the setting confused tf out of me lol, people kept referencing "the city" and then cassie and her parents seem to live out in the middle of nowhere?

Yeah, I think maybe what she was trying to show was "This could happen anywhere!" hence the vagueness, but it looked like LA and was supposed to be set in Ohio? I just don't think Emerald has enough experience with/in American culture and that hurt her overall movie and made it less believable and cogent.

i'm looking forward to watching Days of Bagnold Summer bc a) I love British coming of age movies and b) I love Earl Cave's parents, Nick Cave and Susie Bick. Susie has been so supportive on her insta page of this movie and I just really want the best for him and their family since his twin tragically passed away in 2015. the movie does look quite sweet as well!

Days of the Bagnold Summer looks really cute. I've got such a crush on Monica Dolan (and Tamsin Grieg, obvs).

Blithe Spirit looks good, but it's always good, isn't it? I saw Angela Lansbury and Jemima Rooper when they did the North American tour in 2014 or 2015.

I am looking forward to I Care A Lot, I've heard good things.

I just started watching The Investigation, it's a Danish miniseries based on a real life murder. I really enjoy it; I'll probably finish it today.
