I really rather enjoyed it. I like Carey Mulligan, but I mostly watched it because I majored in history and my thesis supervisor specialized in Anglo-Saxon England (so my Tudor England ass was such an embarrassment to her) so I was already familiar with Sutton Hoo and the artefacts found there, but I didn't know the backstory.
I can definitely see it not being everyone's thing, and it's not perfect by any means (Nicole Kidman was originally cast in the role of Edith, and she's 18 years older than Carey so you can tell that it's not an age-appropriate role), but I liked the story, I liked the cast, I thought it was gorgeously shot, and I've recommended to others that they watch it.
The ONLY reason I watched it in the first place was after hearing a review of it in which [Spoiler (click to open)]it was made clear that the leads would not have a romance. That made me interested because I was afraid it would be trope-y ahistorical mess. And for half the movie, it wasn't. Then it went to hell, for me.
not really interested in this film since it seems whiter than i can stand, but when i watched the trailer i wasn't paying attention and feared lily james was playing a woman that falls for a nazi again.
This was good for half the movie. Then it went right into the shitter because it shifted focus in a way that diminished it, for me. It had such potential, too.
