She mentions here that Joss pitted people against each other, and I wonder if that's what caused the issues between SMG and Aly (they reconciled years ago).

I'm glad Charisma spoke up about the abusive bastard, and I hate that this happened to her and others.

Charisma got thinner and thinner on Angel too. He was so bitter about her getting fat (aka pregnant).

I watched Buffy all in one go on DVD sets the first time I saw it - this was vaguely noticeable when u watch it like that, but S7 is really when SMG started looking flat out boney.

I don't doubt his love of waif-like women contributed to that. It's very telling how he was so obsessed with that look.

The only one I remember not being waif thin was Tara... who was styled/written/presented as the "frumpy" one. So yeah, fuck Joss Whedon for many, many things.

Pretty sure when she was cast he called her fat. Amber is super tiny. The pressure on his sets to be stick thin must have been terrible.

I don't doubt he did. I would never say she was that, or say she was anything but thin - she was somewhat broader (I hate that word but idk what else to use) than the other girls (hips/shoulders/boobs lol) though which is why I don't doubt he was hell to her for that. She didn't exactly fall into the SMG/Eliza Dushku body type. I have her body type though not as thin and I remember it always made me so angry that she was styled to be this like bump in the log frumpy girl because she dared to have shoulders and hips. And I get that some of that was her character but it always rubbed me the wrong way.

Totally get what you're saying. She just had a different frame. I remember being surprised the first time I saw her in real life because she was so little and that gave me a wake up call for what the other women on the show must look like off camera. Nothing wrong with being tiny, but it really made me realize how slim they really were.

I think also that wardrobe departments in Hollywood tend to be awful with dressing any woman who are not the smallest possible sample size, they usually get dressed in unflattering and frumpy clothes to just hide their shape all together, rather than find something that might actually flatter a curvier build. It seems like everyone just gives up if you can’t fit into the sample size clothes 😔 Amber probably did look so much smaller in real life when she was able to dress herself in a normal way and not be draped in shapeless sacks. I remember at one point there was even a top Tara was wearing with a stripe directly across her middle, and it just looked sooo bad

I remember that top. It was horrible on her. I like to think that everywhere is getting better with things like people being different sizes (especially women because I think men had that easier already) so hopefully things are improving. I can remember wanting to wear some of the outfits Buffy had back when I was in high school and learning really quickly that I did not have the body type for them at all. I think it's great for kids to get to see more body types on screen now.

Great username by the way.

100% believe it.
anorexia and eating disorders pretty much was an epidemic in the late 90s early 2000s. it affected both women and men and considering how hollywood media shapes society, i absolutely without question believe whedon put pressure on the female actors on his show. i remember watching buffy and thinking to myself: 'is smg ok? she looks sick' then i realized standards of beauty at the time was kate moss cocaine waif and it makes perfect sense.
