Justin Timberlake Faces Online Backlash Over His Misogynistic History in Framing Britney Spears Doc

Feb 07, 2021 08:16

The New York Times documentary - Framing Britney Spears - aired on FX and Hulu on February 5th, and Justin Timberlake is facing major backlash over his misogynistic and downright disrespectful comments about his ex Britney Spears. The documentary was meant to explore the #FreeBritney movement and her ongoing legal conservatorship, but Twitter was quick to clock Timberlake as he started trending over the weekend.

The doc calls out Timberlake for profiting off of their breakup and by pushing the narrative that she had cheated on him. “The way that people treated her, to be very high school about it, was like she was the school slut and he was the quarterback,” NYT critic Wesley Morris explained.

The documentary also plays a 2002 radio interview, in which Timberlake is asked, “Did you fuck Britney Spears?” He laughs and says, “Okay, I did it.” Twitter went in to defend Spears and Janet Jackson. Two women the bus throwing singer has wronged with no apology.

A spokesperson for Timberlake did not immediately respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.

The hashtags “WE ARE SORRY BRITNEY” and “JanetJacksonAppreciationDay” are currently trending.
