The problem is that someone will be left with the bag. Melvin is at a point where their losses with already have wiped out their entire everything (13 billion dollars) and they are still holding some shorts. If they go brankrupt they will have to sell their assets - which at 13 billion will devalue a lot of stock. This meme will have an economic impact.

And if a bunch of redditors with shallow pockets can do it with Game Stop then a bunch of hostile actors with deep pockets can do much better. Why should Iran build a nuke if they can nuke the US economy by driving the stock of Blockbuster up into the 10,000s?
