ONTD Original: the fashion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Greetings, lovelies!
Welcome back to another installment of the ONTD Original: Buffy the Vampire Slayer...series? Chronicles? Hm. Either way, if you haven't already checked them out, please feel free to do so (all linked at the bottom).
Today, I am going to be posting about some of my most loved and hated looks from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This was suggested by in_between_us and I loved the idea, so thank you very much!
Disclaimer: The ranking is my opinion, and my opinion only. <3 I love commenting back and forth, and I'm absolutely open to opposing views, but please be kind and respectful to each other. These posts are bringing me such joy in the middle of intense isolation, and I truly enjoy making these posts and commenting back and forth with my fellow Buffy fans. <3. That being said, let's jump in!

Willow Rosenberg: The Bad
What is happening here? Why is she wearing a long sleeve shirt under an oversized dress she fished out of a dollar bin somewhere? Who let her leave the house like this? Why is Buffy not giving that look directed at Willow? So many questions.
Why did the stylists decide this represents edgy, cool girls? What? Why did they make Willow so clueless like that? It's just horrible. And that bag? Sis, no.
What? Why?
Honestly surprised Glory wasn't terrified when Willow showed up wearing this, tbh. What even is this? Who made this? A depressed gay man with old curtains and no will to live? It's like a pillow case with sleeves. An ugly pillow case. And Willow had the audacity to be rude to Tara while wearing this? Unspeakable.
[...but theres definitely something unnatural going on here]
Willow Roseberg: The Good
Granted, Willow was about to slash a cute baby deer in the throat and drain its blood for a spell, but this outfit was one of the cuter ones Willow's worn on the show. I love the lighter colors, and the way it screams "Spring." If only the next 60 seconds of the show could be less...murdery.
In general, I love Willow in red. I love when her hair is brighter red and when she's wearing it. I think this outfit was just cute, and is something I would wear (if I chose to wear women's clothing, and could pull off red).
I loved Willow's look in Tabula Rasa. Her hair, her outfit, all of it. It would've been better if she didn't go wiping everyone's brain, but the style remains unbothered.
[and that doesnt usually lead to hugs and puppies.]
Tara Maclay: The Bad
Ok. I'm going to be dragged for body shaming, but this isn't about Tara's body. This is about the decision of the stylists to put Tara in an outfit that gave her the shape of a refrigerator. What even is this mess?
Okay, I'll admit: I know it sounds hypocritical to not include Willow's dress...but I actually don't HATE Willow's dress in this scene. But Tara's dress here...why am I getting cheap, Disney-Princess-in-a-high-school-play-on-a-high-school-budget vibes from Tara's dress here? On one hand, I love Tara and her willingness to live authentically...on the other hand, I really, really don't understand this dress.
What in the actual hell is happening here? What kind of horrible human decided Tara needed to wear this? I mean, I love Tara. As a character, she was probably one of the most considerate, sweet ones who never actually did anything to intentionally harm another character on the show. But this outfit was just terrible. The shirt, the hair, the skirt, all of it.

Tara Maclay: The Good
There's something about Tara's look here; the colors, the hair, everything just lends itself to her supportive, sweet personality and attentiveness to Dawn after leaving. I've always loved her look here, and I have a newfound love for the golden brown color she's wearing.
Tara's overall look here is cute, imo. Her shirt, her hair, the necklace. It's a lewk. I also love that she did not give any f***s about sassing Spike and calling Anya and everyone out for trying to force Willow to do magic. I've always loved this look.

Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkins: The Bad
Ok, normally I love most things Anya does. But some of her outfits...including this very strange velvet-looking outfit with a completely mismatched trim on the bottom of her pants has me confused. What is going on here? 1100 years of exposure to fashion around the world, and you do THIS to celebrate the ritual sacrifice?! Honey, no.
I don't even have the energy to get into what's wrong here. Just...bad. Badness. Overall, it's a no from me.

Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkins: The Good
This one, people either love or hate. I found this outfit flattering, the hairstyle is cute, and Anya just wore it well. I'm not sure I like the outfit on its own, but something about Anya in this scene made me love the look.
I love this look. Granted, Anya kind of loses her s*** in this episode, outs Dawn as a klepto, and tries to force Willow to do magic. But, generally, given the situation and period of time Anya spends locked in a home without a shower and feeling claustrophobic, I think she looked gorgeous here and I like the outfit/hair/all of it.

Cordelia Chase: The Bad
How on EARTH did Cordelia become a symbol of fashion or popularity when she chose to dress like this? Why would Buffy look at her and go, "Oh, that's the girl I need to be friends with!" I mean, what even IS this? The 90s were a weird time, but...this is just wrong.
Again, I pose the question...how? How do you look THIS bad when you're supposed to be rich AND declare yourself fashionable? What?

Cordelia Chase: The Good
I love this look. The revenge look after recovering from the injury you sustained when trying to make a quick exit after finding your boyfriend cheating on you? Classic. Such a good look. I would've preferred the jacket be a little more fitted, but it's a lewk.

While most of the time, the stylists dressed Cordelia in a way that made her look more like a middle aged teacher and less like a student, I love this look. She does look older in it, and doesn't at ALL look like a high school student, but it's flattering, and she looks gorgeous. This has always been one of my favorite looks from Cordy.

Buffy Summers: The Bad
The look here is just...no bueno. I don't even know where to start with that shirt. It's just horrible. And I'll be honest, I hate the hair. Hate it. I never liked when Buffy cut it, and everything in this outfit just screams, "NO!"
Why would this be the outfit chosen for Buffy when she got back to Sunnydale? Ill-fitted pants, a shirt that does nothing for her, and the entire thing is made worse by the fact that the pants are too short and too wide at the bottom. What the...what?!
Just...why? The skirt isn't cute. The shirt COULD be okay, but even then I'm hating the neckline. And the hat? Take it easy, Joan.
Buffy, Buffy, Buffy... where does one even start here? The tube top. The bandana. The bag. The watch and weird wrist band. What is happening here? And why is it happening? Why do you want to hurt me?
Why did they style Buffy to look like a 35 year old Mom trying to recapture her youth? Honey, we already dealt with Amy's Mom. We don't need another one. Dem sunglasses. Dat shirt. DEM PANTS. Honey, what is you doin?

Buffy Summers: The Good
Does anyone NOT love this outfit and how badass Buffy was in it? I am obsessed with this look. Such an insanely good looking outfit with the jacket, and without.
This one is probably controversial, but I love Buffy in the short skirt/high boot look. I loved the gold minidress in Never Kill a Boy on First Date, and I loved the look of the leopard minidress (minus the leopard) she wore in The Puppet Show. Fight me, I think it looks good.
I just love this look. The shirt, the dress, the boots, the hair. She looks so relaxed, and I just love the style. It's all so flattering, and I'm obsessed. <3
