I liked it well enough. Hopefully they course correct with some characters (Zach/Kellyss very uncharming and annoying son).
I guess they are officially ignoring anything to do with The New Class since the show runner said "I hope we go on long enough and the show gets rebooted again 20 years from now for a 3rd reboot"
I always thought Zack was rich, but not overly so in order to remain relatable to all viewers. Like, he had a cell phone in the early 90s, which was a total rich kid flex. I seem to remember his dad (maybe his mom too?) having a great job and driving nice cars. He always had expendable income for everything-unless the plot point was that the gang needed money, then he suddenly didn’t.
The show clearly didn’t want money to be an object to get in the way of their plots and hijinks, until they decided that particular episode it should be. It was all over place. But ultimately I would have classified him as SoCal upper middle class, which to the rest of the world would be rich, lol.
All characters except Kelly, and debatably Slater, were portrayed as rich. They only made it overt with Lisa though.
As the other user said, Zack had a cell phone before anyone, his dad sold computers, they all lived in the Palisades which is a wealthier LA neighborhood, Jessie is said to have grown up next door to Zack and her dad owns a resort in Palm Springs.
At the end of the day, it's a kid's show so continuity is kinda all over the place. They weren't portrayed as BH90210 rich but the characters definitely weren't meant to be "middle class" either.
When Tiffani guest starred on that podcast MPG is on right after the reboot premiered, they actually talked about the status of Kelly's family. MPG's pretty sure the Kapowskis are wealthy too considering they also lived in the Palisades (and he called out the dad for taking Kelly's money for prom when it only would have been enough for one meal to feed their large family).
The continuity (or lack thereof) might be why I wasn’t sure whether he actually was rich or not. The cell phone is a give away but his bedroom looked like it belonged in a middle class suburban house. Ngl though I forgot all the stuff about his dad.
While it doesnt really add anything to the history, I feel like they should still include it. It went on for 7 seasons, the longest lasting SBTB iteration. At least when it comes to Belding mentions and your casual Screech throwaway lines.
