December 13, 2020 - Amazon Studios and Automatik will produce a biopic (Fred & Ginger) on the on- and off-screen lives of famous dancing partners Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers who are to be played by Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley (Bell and Qualley will also produce).
- Astaire and Rogers starred in 10 movies together, starting with Flying Down to Rio in 1933 and ending with The Barkleys of Broadway in 1949.
- The biopic will examine "what individually drove Astaire and Rogers while celebrating the creative magic between them. It will tell the real love story between these two legends both on and offscreen". Astaire and Rogers were both married to other people throughout their onscreen collaboration.
- It will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World & I Am Not Okay with This), with the screenplay by Arash Amel (A Private War).
- Both Bell and Qualley have been in dance-centric projects with Bell starring as a dancer in his "breakout performance in 2000’s Billy Elliot" and Qualley had performed as a dancer in FX’s Fosse/Verdon and the "
viral Kenzo perfume ad directed by Spike Jonze".
