Do actors have to look like the person they're playing? The audience can't suspend their disbelief? Are most people even familiar enough with Clara Bow for this to be an issue?

girl it is not that serious lol. of course an audience can suspend its disbelief, but why as a filmmaker would you not try to cast someone who even remotely resembles the figure you're depicting? and idk, it probably depends on who you ask, but she's an icon of the silent film era so enthusiasts/historians will definitely notice.

I can suspend belief as long as the person is a great actor (they should at least be able to get the mannerisms and shit down).

idk i feel like old hollywood stars had distinctive looks and they do have a lot of ardent fans who do notice the difference, even among young people

i feel like you could find someone who bore some kind of resemblance instead of just picking from the fishbowl of the same 5 actresses over and over

I think it's always cooler when they cast period pieces with actors that fit the look of the time. I remember reading that Mad Men's casting people had to tell the actors on the show not to work out too much because the ultra fit look is more of a modern aesthetic.

yeah margot def has a face that's seen an iphone
emma can be styled to look vintage but her mannerisms are very modern imo

I don't think I could act my way out of a paper bag, but damn I'd be good at not working out too muchXD

Nah, I agree. I hate when casting is reduced to a lookalike contest.

10 years ago they definitely would've cast Natalie Portman.
