To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power.

I wish people (or politicians, heh) would talk about something other Buffy related than her boyfriends. Like, it doesn't need to be talked about at all but the show is interesting for other stuff.

Exactly. It could be about friendship, personal development, living on a Hellmouth.

Gender norms, racism, queer representation, it's a meaty show, there's lots to dissect/ critique (the racism)/ gush about.
And fun stuff!

Racism though?

On a virtually all white show?

Okay.

That's what the criticism is for. Buffy the show is racist. They somehow managed to work active racist imagery and structures into a predominantly white show. I clarified that because obviously it's laughable that the show itself would have anything of substance to say on racism.

It is still wild to me that Joss got away with having the First Slayer be a black woman who was metaphorically raped by a committee of men who embued her with powers so they could her as a weapon and had her speechless and acting demonic.

This. I can get behind the metaphysic rape because it was appropriately condemned in the show and sort of fell in line with the other watchers' behaviour we saw before but the way they represented the first slayer? And had others (Buffy) comment on her? And the entire structure of Restless, using Apocalype Now, which I haven't seen but I've read Heart of Darkness, and then what a coincidence, the first slayer is black, and it seems like a Heart of Darknessy meditation on morality and race and the evil that we all have inside of us, but especially Black People, For White People It's Just A Hurdle, A Hidden Conflict ....! Like, people still debate on the intention and meaning of heart of darkness, but Joss Whedon of all people does not have the skill and morality to make it a theme.

Buffy was racist as hell

Like the show and the character. Everyone likes to memory hole the shit she said to Kendra

Thank you! I know I could have worded that better but still- at least I got my wish that people stop talking about her ex-boyfriends.

When Anya is an option for 'most considerate' it speaks volumes.

Tbh I wish more ppl would talk about what absolute shit friends Xander and Willow were to Buffy. Or just how much Xander sucked and what an absolute creep he was to ALL the women on the show.
