October 21, 2020 Nigerians have demonstrated since early this month against SARS, a squad started in 1992 to thwart violent crimes including robberies and kidnapping. Amnesty International, a nongovernmental human rights organization, has accused SARS officers of multiple abuses, including torture and killings. In response, Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced on Oct. 11 for SARS to be disbanded, but officers are being redeployed to other police units. Calls for justice escalated when Nigerian police allegedly opened fire at protesters demonstrating in Lagos at Lekki Toll Bridge.
