Even after many Parks rewatching it never crossed my mind that she was mixed. Even after a couple remarks made by Leslie I still never thought she was anything but 100% white so seeing her play Black characters all of a sudden has been odd. Like she has played white or race-less characters for so many years. I can't be the only one confused by this change.

she played a mixed character in black ish too. i think she only looks white to white people, just like some people thought zayn was ~italian~

her dad is quincy jones i dont think she was exactly able to hide her blackness. shouldnt your questions be directed at the industry instead that even when they have a black actress they have her play a white or non black character? like that's some effort to deny blackness in media. i don't understand what's odd about a black actress finally being able to play black characters when maybe the industry didn't allow her this privilege before. like maybe she wasn't able to and now that she's established she can? idgi

You're absolutely right. It's not my place to question another Black person's blackness and Hollywood notorious antiBlackness definitely has more todo with the roles she got to play than anything she did. It's definitely sad that she's finally getting to explore Black roles at 44 and not when she started out in her teens.

you said it yourself that she's quincy jones' daughter. you really think she didn't have the pull to play explicitly black characters in the past if she didn't want to? and hollywood loves giving mixed actresses roles that could go to dark-skinned/not-mixed actresses, so this idea that they wouldn't want her of all ppl to represent palatable blackness doesn't even make sense.

but she's a black woman who played white characters so what's your point?
like the argument here isn't that she was given roles to play black characters because a casting director was wanted a biracial woman to play a black character. the argument here was that she's was playing passing characters.

i was responding to this: "i don't understand what's odd about a black actress finally being able to play black characters when maybe the industry didn't allow her this privilege before."

so again: and hollywood loves giving mixed actresses roles that could go to dark-skinned/not-mixed actresses, so this idea that they wouldn't want her of all ppl to represent palatable blackness doesn't even make sense.

honestly everything about rashida screams needing at least forty years to come to terms with her blackness

I don't know if it's your intention but I don't like that your comment seems to imply that she was denying or hiding her identity.

She's been vocal about being mixed race. Has famous black father who she speaks about often.

This shift in her career has little to do with her and more about how the industry has pushed her and boxed her into those roles

I mean, I have absolutely no right to question her blackness but like...she has a massive bag of Hollywood's favourite thing 🥁 NEPOTISM in her back pocket. She could've walked into any door and played any role she wanted to. Her name has a lot of weight and she could've voice her issues with playing an Italian character on the office or a raceless character on Parks. She wasn't some actress off the stress she had a bigger voice than most.

Idk. Nepotism was definitely on her side for her to get her break, but I don't really think she had that kind of clout either.

Nah.

But I agree she could have voiced her concerns.

Knowing how she grew up and her being aware of how people precieved her im not surprised she'd take on racially ambiguous roles. Idk it just felt like ylthe original comment was implying she was antiblack and there was a hidden agenda for the shift in her career. And I don't think that fair.
