i'm really sick of rdj's tony stark persona but i think he's a talented actor, and i wish he'd do something that actually stretches his acting skills a bit. though considering "the judge" maybe i shouldn't...

I love Tony Stark, but he's dead so yeah, I want to see RDJ in a nice drama. Or like an HBO show.

MTE. I'm always saying I miss his "real" movies. Charlie Bartlett for example remains grossly underrated. I'd even be happy with another Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Or if they could have made Imperial Bedrooms. I'd still want to see his take on THAT version of Julian Wells.

I completely forgot Charlie Bartlett was a thing and a thing that I watched before this comment. I only have the vaguest memory of it, but I definitely need to rewatch it now.

For me his most raw scene is when his character sits Charlie down and gives Charlie a glimpse of his past. For those of us old enough to remember RDJ's mid-90s, it's a bit of a gut punch. It's not his most serious role but it's arguably one of the most serious scenes of his career.

I actually found it on YT - www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEv2-jUtJos

When RDJ got out of prison, he couldn't book a film because he couldn't get insurance. He didn't work from 2000 to 2003. Finally a friend paid for the insurance himself, and that's how he started to get his career back. After some success, he decided he wanted to stick it to Hollywood for treating him so badly after his issues, so he only wanted to do films with franchise potential--Sherlock, Ironman, Dr. Dolittle, etc. He also wanted to be the highest paid voice actor and demanded $5 million for one Mr. Peanut commercial. They went along with it, but fired him after one campaign and got someone much cheaper.

He also decided he wanted an Oscar, so he did The Judge, but he badly miscalculated, it was a bad movie, and he got very insulted that the Academy didn't honor him. It's all been a strategy, it isn't by accident he did Sherlock and other franchise films. That's where the money is.

It still sucks that said friend was Mel Gibson.

It does. It sucks so much that's why I didn't name him. But since you have, he's bailed out a lot of drug addicts. It's a clue about the people you see in his films, whether they've ever been publicly busted with drugs before or not. js
