I feel like for Trump this really isn’t about the data risks because I doubt that he truly cares about that... he wants to ban TikTok in the US as a revenge to all the kids who got tickets for his event in Tulsa a few months ago. He is so petty and childish.

I dont use it after a lot of people on a pervious post said that it was a data security nightmare, but it has some really fun content. I'm in a dnd group and they link memes from tiktok a lot and they're very good lol

I don't know that a ban is the best policy solution, per se. But there are a lot of dangers with apps like these in terms of cyber hygiene/data privacy. Look no further than the FBI/CIA(?) using social media for facial recognition during the BLM protests. Snapchat had a huge data leak, and they still managed to survive until IG added stories and Kylie Jenner tanked their stock with an offhand comment.

But you can be sure that Tik Tok's data is being collected and used for not-so-great purposes. They can say all they want that the US data is on a US server, but users have no assurance that that data isn't shared out (see FB+Cambridge Analytica). Users just click 'accept' without reading. Moreover, Tik Tok has had a history of biasing algorithms to wealth/wealth-projecting profiles and censoring mentions of HK protests, Tiananmen Square, etc. Basically, all of these platforms are security and individual privacy threats.

i have had two friends "jokingly" say they're going to be crushed if tiktok is banned and i'm just like ??? it's the internet. something else will rise. it's not like it's been around so long that it's engrained in the public consciousness, it's not youtube.

I understood it to be a ban on new downloads after whatever date (I think it was supposed to be yesterday). So if you had it, it would keep working but eventually it would glitch out bc you couldn't download updates and stuff.
