-The story of the EGOT begins in 1984 , when actor Philip Michael Thomas (Miami Vice) gave an interview with the Associated press where he professed his goal of winning the 4 awards in 5 years. He had a gold medallion with the acronym made.In 1985 Thomas told reporters that the medallion actually stood for Energy, growth,opportunity and Talent. "Miami Vice" ended it's run in 1989, and the story of the EGOT faded into obscurity until 2009.
-On December 3,2009. "30 Rock" aired the episode "Dealbreakers Talkshow #0001". Tracy Morgan's character looks for a gift for his wife and spots the EGOT gold medallion and is told of its origin story. Tracy decides to adopt the goal for himself, and ask advice from guest star EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg.
-By the end of 2010 the EGOT had seeped into pop culture and the quest to achieve it has grown every year since. Here is a list of some entertainers one award shy of the EGOT
