September 21, 2020 “Schitt’s Creek” made history for Pop TV on Sunday night by fully sweeping the major Emmy comedy categories, including outstanding series.
Watchmen also dominated this year’s 72nd Emmy Awards, landing 11 total kudos - more than any other program this year - including the outstanding limited series category, best limited series actress for Regina King, limited supporting actor for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and writing for a limited series or movie.
Then there was HBO’s fan favorite drama “Succession,” which won best drama, drama actor (Jeremy Strong), writing for a drama and directing for a drama.
That made it a big night for HBO: Wacthmen, Succession, Last Week Tonight, Zendaya with her role in Euphoria, Mark Ruffalo for "I Know This Much is True" , HBO ended this season with 30 Emmy wins, whereas Netflix had 21.
A year ago, when juggernauts Veep and Game of Thrones ended its run, it seemed like HBO had lost their most dominand Emmy winning series, but this year they outdid themselves, HBO had 11 wins during the telecast while Netflix only had 2.
HBO programming president Casey Bloys“Obviously there was a lot of questions about, ‘what will HBO do after Game of Thrones?’ This is a very nice way to answer that,” . “Netflix, of course, is a huge and formidable competitor. You want to be aware of your competition but not distracted by them. At some points, the volume game will probably win because that’s mathematics. But we’ll just continue to do the kinds of shows that we believe it with people we believe in.”
Specifically for the telecast, it was a good night for cable, which won a combined 20 awards. Streamers won 3, while broadcast picked up zero.
It's also important to talk about Disney Plus The Mandalorian, which scored 7 eight Emmys in its first year of eligibility (all during the Creative Arts ceremonies last week), Disney+ had 8 wins overall.
