Nurse Ratched is, no doubt about it, an icon. This is her story from a groundbreaking book to an Oscar winning movie and now a Netflix series of her very own.

anyone seen the show yet?

I've never seen the original film, so I can't draw any comparisons between the two versions.

It kind of felt like a more focussed season of AHS tbh, and as that I enjoyed it quite a bit.

There were some bizarre things though. Like the show focusses a lot on how lesbianism during the time period it's set and how it was seen as a mental illness and the truly horrific "treatments" to cure it, but at the same time completely ignores other things from the time period. For example there is a marriage arrangement for respectability between a white lesbian and a black gay man and nobody ever makes any mention of it as an issue even though afaik this would have been illegal and most definitely not widely accepted.

Guess they couldnt handle more than one social issue lol

I too, was confused by the time period for a couple scenes due to anti-miscegenation laws still being enforced in California. Like he made partner at a law firm and she’s the governor’s second in command? They’re in that big, suburban house?

There are also only a handful of scenes where the non-white characters experience hostility like when the doctor and patient have to pay first before receiving their food order. But that made a little more sense since the majority of the show is at that hospital or fucked up motel.

That's Ryan Murphy for you.
He did the same thing with Hollywood. Racism is bad but a movie with an interracial couple breaks every record and everybody loved it... in the 50s. And his stans will say "but it's supposed to not be realistic! It's a 'what if' scenario!". Hmm no! Ryan Murphy's understanding of bigotry is often superficial yet he wants to act as if he's doing something. If he wants to keep doing period shows featuring minorities, he needs to ask help from historians.

Ugh I couldn't agree more about Hollywood. ESPECIALLY the scene at the Oscar's. Why did the chick jave so much flack for attending as a black woman, but the guy was already in his seat?
