He’s done a lot in the industry and him owning his own studio is game changing, but he has a lot of issues with Black women. He’s built his career off of stereotypes and Black women’s pain. And it goes unaddressed in large circles. Not to mention the fact that his work has not improved, he doesn’t trust anyone else to write for his projects.

his work has not improved at all! and it looks and sounds low budget, from the movies to the tv shows. the profits that should be going into improving his production values is instead going into his pockets and the audience is going to continue to be served day old oatmeal. it's sad.

ALSO black content by black creators is consistently profitable but hollywood will convince you every black success is a fluke or lightning in a bottle. no, black audiences are fiercely loyal and want to see themselves onscreen, which is why tripe like what tyler shovels out does well.

He can keep writing whatever it is he writes but does it have to look so cheap?

Perry's movies manage to translate a lot of the energy that was present in his stage plays and I gaurantee you that is part of what keeps his audience around. The very thing certain black folks find disrespectable about his approach is exactly what others are there for, as you said.

My friend was watching his recent BET shows and pointed out how terribly he portrayed the female protagonists in the shows and how their "salvation" was usually in the form of a man. It's the same thing he does in his movies. Why does the black woman always need to be a hot mess? Why do they always have to be seen as problematic?
