Israeli model Barak Shamir did a Kobe Bryant tribute photoshot (scroll in above embedded post), in full blackface. After blacklash, he made his Instagram account with over 170k followers (where the photos were originally posted) private.

Oh no.

Is the controversy of black face not well known in Israel? Not giving him an excuse (especially because this is a world wide issue) but I def don't know sometimes what's okay to do in the US vs not okay somewhere else. Like I had no idea that g*spsy was a slur for the Romani until college.

i guess my thought is like, even if we were to assume that they had no idea how much of an issue blackface is, this would still be a super weird thing to do as a tribute, right?

USA vs International can be a bit of cultural gap at times.

When I would go visit family in Colombia it was very common in some areas to see mammie images on food brands.

I've heard about that Dutch tradition of Zwarte Piet, although it's been getting a lot of pushback in recent years.

I still temmeber the KFC cricket ad where an Australian fan was handing chicken to a West Indies fan. There was so much confusion because that stereotype is not a thing here. At all.

There was. And Americans gonna American cause they refused to believe other countries have different cultures.

It’s not like that god awful ‘skit’ cause Australia has a long history of blackface ourselves. But the chicken thing is very American specific.

Especially 10 years ago. We’re much more aware of stuff now and there’s constant discussions on blackface

lol

Google Israel black face - there enough national instances for Israelis to know wtf it is.

The poc of Israel were marching and protesting for BLM earlier this year and for the racism they go through themselves.

Jeez, that's crazy. I really wasn't trying to stir the pot or anything, this just seems so insanely obvious that it was offensive.

Sure. Maybe twenty years ago. But in the digital age there is no excuse. We all have the internet.

I genuinely believe so tbh. My half-sisters dressed up in Saris for Purim. When I told them that it was Cultural appropriation, they did not agree at all. I told them that you shouldn't dressup in something so Cultural like a religious garment, and they only saw it as a form of flattery. They didn't get it at all. I had to drop the subject.

Wearing a sari is really not the same as someone doing blackface

A sari isn’t a religious garment but it’s still super dumb for someone to do for Purim lmao. It’s basically like wearing a “costume” of.....jeans and a tshirt.
