I see...what constitutes as a racist joke today is “she has a hard time pronouncing the ingredients” (btw it wasn’t even a joke, there was no punchline, no one laughed, it was more of a set up for Sofia to call Ellen old and famous). You’re missing the point completely. I’ll help you out: this controversy IS NOT ABOUT ELLEN BEING MEAN TO A CELEBRITY. Ellen was not “mean” to Sofia, as Sofia herself made clear. This controversy is about ELLEN BEING RACIST AND THINKING MAKING FUN OF ACCENTS IS ACCEPTABLE. Something that’s been consistent with the overall criticism of Ellen like her being friends with George W. Bush (a unrepentant racist) and acting as if that’s ok because that’s just “having different views” and her running a racist and hostile workplace.

As for the video, this isn’t even about a specific instance. This exchanges between Ellen and Sofia happened countless times since she was a frequent guess and her accent was always the topic. I remember a segment from like 2010 where she called Colombia’s president with her “funny accent” and everything. There’s even a whole fucking Covergirl commercial where the whole punchline is Ellen not understanding anything Sofia says. So yes, guess you’re the one who’s not familiar with what ppl are criticizing.

I emphasized FROM MY FIRST COMMENT the criticism wasn’t solely about Ellen’s personal treatment of Sofia and that’s why it’a silly for Vergara to show up claiming she was in on the joke as if that changes anything or makes it less racist (RACIST. Not “mean”. Although yea, they’re obviously mean jokes regardless of how Sofia personally felt).
